Trevor Noah is facing criticism once again, this time for his comments regarding the backlash that Rishi Sunak, the new British Prime Minister, received. While the news of Rishi Sunak’s appointment as the new prime minister was generally well-received by most, Trevor Noah has suggested that there has been racism directed towards him.
During an episode of the popular show “The Daily Show,” Trevor Noah discussed the backlash Rishi Sunak faced, with some people making comments like “Now the Indians are going to take over Great Britain.” Notable figures, including Piers Morgan, challenged this claim, asserting that there was no significant backlash against Sunak and that the media was unfairly portraying Britain as a racist country.
In his monologue, Trevor remarked, “Watching the story of Rishi Sunak becoming England’s first prime minister of color, of Indian descent, and so many other things, and then witnessing the backlash, is quite revealing about how people perceive the role they or their group have played in history. What I mean by that is, you hear many people saying, ‘Oh, they’re taking over, now the Indians are going to take over Great Britain, and what comes next?'”
He continued, “Why are you so afraid? And I believe it’s because the unspoken part, which many people may not realize they are saying, is ‘We don’t want these individuals who were previously oppressed to attain power because they might treat us the way we treated them.'”
However, in response to the backlash his comments generated, Trevor clarified, “I wasn’t implying that the entire UK is racist. I was addressing the racists who object to Rishi as PM because of his race. That’s why I said ‘some people.'”
His comments have also been challenged by former chancellor Sajid Javed, who stated, “Simply wrong. A narrative tailored to his audience, at the expense of being completely detached from reality. Britain is the most successful multiracial democracy on earth and proud of this historic achievement.” Social media users have also shared their thoughts on his statements.
